vrp imageCurriculum of Place
We encourage interdisciplinary curriculum aligned with Vermont standards that builds on and utilizes historical, environmental and human resources in the community. The community becomes a laboratory for student learning and direct participation in democratic practice. more

We use service-learning as teaching strategy to combine academic and social education goals to meet real community needs. Service-learning requires application of knowledge and skills. Systematic reflection about the experience is crucial. more

Student Leadership
We promote respect, responsibility, teamwork and cooperation between youth, teachers, and the community. We encourage growth in participatory leadership skills and civic involvement. We work to enhance student voice and leadership in decision-making and civic engagement to promote and support school change towards the development of equitable, democratic community schools. more

extravaganzaSchool and Community Partnership

We encourage our schools and communities to take their own actions to ensure the long-term vitality and well-being of the community. The school is seen as a "hub" of the community. We work to promote youth and adult partnerships through school and community collaboration. We advocate for thriving sustainable small schools and communities in Vermont. more

Documentation and Assessment
We encourage schools to document locally created curriulum, reflections, and stories of youth and community interaction to inspire each other and help us assess where our challenges lie. This documentation takes a number of finished forms including published curriculum units and is shared on our web site

Schools also develop a portfolio to showcase their work. Portfolios highlight student work, community contributions, depth and breadth of the work, and youth partnerships. Portfolio entries are be assessed by rubrics and used for self assessment and improvement as well as for external documentation. curriculum and VRP Reports
