Learning to Lead
by Shauna Bryer
My name is Shauna Bryer. I graduated from Peoples Academy recently and have been a part of the Vermont Rural Partnership for approximately two years. Three years ago I became involved in a community group called the Morristown Community Asset Building Team. This vision team was developed to spread Search Institutes Asset message through the community. Peoples Academy had recently taken the asset survey, and the data needed disseminating. The Morristown Community Asset Building Team asked the Vermont Rural Partnership group to help disseminate the data. A one-day retreat was held where a select and diverse group of students studied and validated the data under the leadership of the Vermont Rural Partnership. This day was the start of a collaboration between the Vermont Rural Partnership and the Asset Team.
Being a part of the Vermont Rural Partnership was a great experience. It gave me the chance to meet with other students from our Rural Partner Cabot. It also opened up leadership opportunities as well as strengthening already existing leadership skills. Retreats and meetings were held between the two schools, and we were brought closer together. We learned from each other and planned for the future. As a result, we met with the Commissioner of Education as well as the Deputy Commissioner and discussed our concerns and suggestions. We felt good because the Commissioner really was interested in what we had to say. The Vermont Rural Partnership also gave me an opportunity to lead two asset survey data dissemination retreats in Cabot and Brattleboro. I was also able to play a vital role in Morrisvilles first Party for the People: A Celebration of Community. This community party brought twelve hundred Morrisville residents of all ages together to reminisce, eat, dance, play games and have a great time. It has been wonderful being a part of the Vermont Rural Partnership. I feel that because of my involvement I was able to be a better leader as President of my senior class and Vice President of the National Honor Society at Peoples Academy.
Student leadership is vital in any community and school. Unfortunately, a lot of potential leaders just dont know how to fine tune their skills or are afraid to try. Being part of a group of leaders like the Vermont Rural Partnership is a great way for students to feel that their voice can make a difference.
