Curriculum of Place
The term "Curriculum of Place" refers to an interdisciplinary curriculum woven from the threads of the local cultural and natural heritage. A curriculum of place is a local curriculum-- a curriculum that tells the story of the ongoing relationship that exists between a community and the land on which that community depends. It is a curriculum that utilizes a community's resources, rich history, and local uniqueness to teach essential skills and concepts and stimulates discovery of the broader world. It is built on the foundation of developing a deep sense of place, a sense of belonging, a sense of purpose and a sense of intimacy with the land and the people who have adapted to that living landscape.
Schools in the Vermont Rural Partnership have been working for years to look within the community, the history and living traditons and the unique landscape as a springboard for developing localized curriculum. A rich diversity of themes and content have been addressed reflecting the individual teachers, student interests and the needs of the community.
